Editor: This small engraving from the British School features an elaborate ornamental design, reminiscent of a candelabra or fountain. It's so intricate! What's your take on this piece? Curator: It feels like peering into someone’s imagination, doesn't it? Like a dream of a Roman ruin, meticulously rendered. The sphinxes, the classical portrait, the almost absurdly ornate top... it's a celebration of excess, perhaps a comment on the fashion of the time? Or maybe it's just beautiful madness. What do you think? Editor: I hadn't considered the satirical aspect, I was too busy being wowed by the detail! Curator: Exactly! Isn't it wonderful how art can surprise us?
