This is the third volume from "Honderd gezichten op de berg Fuji", made by Katsushika Hokusai. The title, inscribed vertically, anchors the composition. Yet, it is not merely a label; it’s an invocation, conjuring the mountain as a cultural keystone. The mountain is more than a geological feature; it is a symbol. In Shintoism, mountains are dwelling places of the gods, a concept not dissimilar to the Greek Mount Olympus. The mountain as axis mundi, connecting earth and sky, resonates across cultures, from the Tower of Babel to the ziggurats of Mesopotamia. Note the wave-like patterns. These recurring motifs echo the cyclical nature of existence. Such symbols have journeyed through time, carrying layers of meaning, shifting with cultural tides yet retaining a primal emotional resonance. Hokusai’s work invites us to contemplate the continuous dance between change and continuity in the human experience.
