Samuel Mutzner made this painting, Roses in Balcic, using visible brushstrokes to capture a landscape bathed in sunlight. You can almost feel the heat radiating from the canvas. Mutzner's paint application is really interesting here. It's fairly thick, but he doesn't blend it much, leaving each stroke distinct and full of energy. The texture, especially in the foliage, is so tactile, with those little dabs of orange and green just layered on top of each other. Look at the way he renders the hillside, with those broad, sweeping gestures. It feels like he's trying to capture not just the look of the place, but also the sensation of being there, the light and shadow, the way the air feels. This reminds me a little bit of some of Bonnard’s landscapes with that all over composition and how the light seems to vibrate. Ultimately, it's not about getting every detail right, but about creating a feeling, an atmosphere. Paintings like this one remind us that art is a conversation, an ongoing exploration of what it means to see and experience the world.
