David Michael Hinnebusch made "Silver Girl Side 1" by combining found materials with his own graphite drawings on grid paper. The drawings, depicting figures, cars, and family portraits, are pinned inside what appears to be an old window frame. The use of grid paper is interesting. Normally, this would be a surface for technical drawing, or writing, but Hinnebusch has used it for freehand sketching. This tension between the technical and the expressive is key to the work’s significance. The layering of these drawings, combined with the found object of the window, creates a collage effect, where the individual elements contribute to a larger narrative. The choice of materials reflects an engagement with everyday life and found objects. The labor involved is not in the skilled rendering of the images, but in the careful arrangement and combination of elements. The work challenges traditional notions of art by incorporating common materials and techniques, blurring the lines between high art and more vernacular forms of expression. It asks us to consider the value we place on different forms of making, and to recognize the artistry present in the everyday.
