Editor: Here we see Jean Pelletier’s etching, "Semiramis." The scene seems quite dramatic, and the architecture in the background gives it a powerful sense of place. What strikes you about this piece? Curator: Considering this piece within its historical context, it appears to participate in a longer tradition of representing powerful women. But how does the image reinforce or challenge those ideals, considering its probable public reception? Editor: That's a great point! Curator: It is also interesting to note that the piece is titled "Semiramis", which provides a historical, almost mythical, context to the print, in line with the art of the time. Editor: That’s fascinating, seeing how these historical and social contexts play out! Curator: Indeed. It is also interesting to consider that it is an etching, which means that multiple copies would have been made. This brings into question how accessible Pelletier sought to make the piece, or perhaps, to whom the image was intended.
