Joannes Pieter Visser Bender created this print, "Company at the Rijnsburg Abbey Ruins," in the early 19th century. Bender, who died young, made this print during a period of major political and cultural upheaval in the Netherlands. This work presents us with a ruin, a potent symbol of a lost past, around which a group of figures is gathered. The ruin itself—what was once the beating heart of a religious community—is in stark contrast to the figures, who are, presumably, members of the upper class, given their clothes. The figures seem to be almost dwarfed by the scale of the ruin, perhaps suggesting the insignificance of contemporary society when compared to the grand sweep of history. This image might stir feelings of nostalgia, loss, or even a sense of foreboding about the impermanence of human achievements. Bender’s print not only captures a physical place but also invites us to contemplate the passage of time and the shifting fortunes of societies.
