Here's Cornelis Vreedenburgh’s sketch of the Ronde Lutherse Kerk, with just a pencil and paper. I can just imagine him, maybe sitting outside, quickly trying to capture what’s in front of him. I am always interested in the movement that the artist uses, the lines, and the way they communicate feeling, intention, and meaning. You can see the energy and process of how this image came to be. The building is created with lots of small marks, like a swarm of activity. He probably took this sketch back to the studio and maybe used it to make a larger painting. I know that for me, painting is a conversation with other painters. We look and we borrow, and we put our own spin on it. We build off of each other, across time. Each mark contributes to the emotional feel of the work. There's something wonderful about how this piece embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
