This is ‘Closed Gallery’ by Robert Barry and it’s made with language itself. Here, process and idea are inseparable. The statement “During the exhibition the gallery will be closed” transforms the space around it. The words, stark against the blank canvas, invite you to consider absence as a presence, a void as a form. It’s almost confrontational in its simplicity. The texture of the words themselves—crisp, impersonal—contrasts with the potential richness of what isn’t there. Think about that simple serif font. It's unadorned, direct. Is it friendly? Is it sad? Is it meant to challenge our expectations of what art should be? Barry reminds me of Sol LeWitt, in that both artists take an idea and run with it to its logical, and sometimes absurd, conclusion. Like all good art, it's not about answers, but about asking the right questions.
