Curatorial notes

Hendrik Last made this print of the house of the artist Antoine Wiertz. The image offers a glimpse into the cultural world of 19th-century Belgium, a world in which artists sought to establish themselves within a complex social and institutional landscape. Here, Last depicts Wiertz's house as a kind of temple of art, complete with classical statuary in the garden. The somewhat overgrown state of the building gives us a sense of the artist's self-conscious rejection of bourgeois norms, and his desire to create a space apart from the mundane world. The house becomes a stage for Wiertz to play out his artistic persona. To truly understand this image, we can examine the social conditions that shaped artistic production. We can research the patronage systems, the art market, and the role of state institutions in supporting artists like Wiertz. We can consider the ways in which artists negotiated their relationship to the dominant social and political forces of their time. The meaning of art is contingent on its social and institutional context.
