Otto Verhagen made this drawing of two men lying on a beach overlooking the sea with graphite pencil on paper. The process here is exposed, raw, and there is a vulnerability in the unfinished quality. It's like overhearing a conversation. The artist's hand is evident in the visible sketch lines. Notice the cloud of graphite that makes up the sky, and how it gives way to a hard, clearly defined horizon line. There is a constant shifting of gears, from chaos to order, and back again. It reminds me of Cy Twombly’s drawings, where scribbles meet more formal elements, revealing a similar tension. The overall effect is more about feeling than seeing, more about a kind of questioning than a statement. It invites us to contemplate the relationships between looking and feeling, seeing and knowing.
