This miniature portrait of David or Daniel Lingelbach, founder of the Nieuwe Doolhof, was made by Arnoud van Halen in Amsterdam using oil on copper. The choice of copper as a support is significant. Its smooth, non-absorbent surface allowed van Halen to achieve remarkably fine detail, emulating the precision of engraving. The artist built up thin layers of pigment, carefully modeling the sitter's face to capture a sense of his presence. Note the subtle brushwork in the hair and beard, achieved through skillful manipulation of the oil paint. Copper’s durability also made it a prized material for portrait miniatures, which were often kept as treasured keepsakes, passed down through generations as a symbol of family legacy. Although the support is industrial, the application of paint is delicate, elevating it beyond mere craft. This miniature exemplifies the tension between material and the artistic skill, challenging traditional hierarchies of art and craft.
