Niels Larsen Stevns made this pencil drawing, "Studies of Rib Vaults, possibly Saltum Church", and it's a peek into his process. I imagine him, maybe on a chilly day, rapidly sketching the bones of the church interior. The lines are tentative, searching, like he's feeling his way through the space. He’s trying to capture the way the arches meet and fan out, holding up the roof, making the invisible visible. It's a quiet moment of observation. I’m thinking about how so many artists start this way, drawing and sketching, working through the underlayers, mapping out a route. The way the light falls in a room has always inspired artists. We’re all just trying to see a little clearer, and then share that vision.
