This woodblock print, "Cooling Off at Nakazu," was created by Torii Kiyonaga, sometime in the late 18th century. The artist uses a tranquil palette and delicate lines to depict a group of women in light summer kimonos. The composition is structured with vertical lines created by the figures' bodies, contrasting with the horizontal emphasis of the building's facade in the background. The women's placement creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into their tranquil gathering. Kiyonaga was a master of *ukiyo-e*, or "pictures of the floating world". Instead of just depicting the surface appearances of the everyday world, *ukiyo-e* prints sought to capture the underlying essence of the era: a celebration of beauty, leisure, and the ephemeral. Kiyonaga uses the formal elements of his work to distill a sense of calm and refinement, suggesting that beauty is not just about appearance but also about the structures that underpin our perception and experience.
