This photogravure, “Two Unknown Young Women on a Path by a Forest,” by Jules Royer, presents a scene captured through the lens and rendered through a labor-intensive printing process. Photogravure combines the tactile qualities of intaglio printmaking with the tonal range achievable through photography. The process begins with a copper plate, coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue, exposed to a photographic positive, and then etched in an acid bath. The varying depths of the etch create an image that, when inked and printed, captures a remarkable range of tones, from deep shadows to delicate highlights. What’s significant here is the translation of a fleeting moment into a reproducible image, requiring chemical expertise and mechanical precision. The photogravure embodies the collision of art, craft, and industry, challenging our understanding of what constitutes fine art. The very act of its making imbues the image with a social significance that extends beyond the scene depicted, prompting us to reflect on the means of production that brought it into being.
