Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof created this study of goldfish on paper, capturing the fluid forms of these creatures. Here, the fish motif echoes through time, resonating with ancient symbols of fertility, abundance, and transformation. We see the fish as a symbol of Christ in early Christian art, its form discreetly representing the savior. Yet, even earlier, ancient cultures revered fish as sacred beings, guides to the underworld, emblems of life's mysteries. In Dijsselhof's sketches, these age-old associations surface, subtly engaging our collective memory. The flowing lines evoke a sense of constant movement and change. The presence of the fish stir deep, subconscious connections within us, tapping into our primal understanding of life's cyclical nature.
