Antoni Tàpies made this painting, "No doors or windows," with paint and mixed media. It is a rough and ready image, and you can see the hand of the artist in the application of materials, making this a really process-oriented piece. The brown background feels like plaster or mud, and it’s a rich foil to the white elements. The bed frame, the scrawled text, and the rumpled linen all have this ghostly quality. There is a sense of layering here, literally. The white pigment has been built up to create texture and depth. The crosses scrawled to the right are smeared with the same feverish energy that I might attack a canvas with! Like Cy Twombly, Tàpies leaves us with a kind of visual poetry, open-ended and resisting any easy answers.
