Untitled (photograph of Gittings photo: "Morning Sunlight")
Curatorial notes
Paul Gittings created this untitled photograph of his photo "Morning Sunlight" using an analogue camera. The sepia-toned image presents a scene dominated by geometric patterns and light. Sunlight streams through a window creating strong shadows which form a grid-like structure on the floor. This sharply contrasts with the softer figures of two young girls holding hands near the window, their forms rendered with a gentle focus. The formal composition sets up a dialogue between rigid lines and soft shapes, between light and shadow. The grid of shadows recalls the structured rationality of modern architecture, while the children, bathed in light, introduce a human element, suggesting innocence and vulnerability. Gittings's manipulation of light and shadow, his use of geometric patterns, and the contrast between sharp and soft focus, create a complex interplay of form and content, resulting in a piece that invites ongoing interpretation.
