Victo Ngai made this strange and enchanting image, Frogfolio Utopia, with what looks like digital painting tools. What a strange process that must be! I love the way the frog becomes a kind of world in itself, its wide-open mouth framing a miniature landscape of rolling hills, trees, and tiny buildings. This makes me think of how art itself is a kind of container, holding different ideas, stories, and emotions all at once. The smooth, almost slick texture of the frog's skin contrasts with the intricate details of the landscape inside, which I read as a conversation between surface and depth. Look at that long, pink tongue reaching out, almost beckoning us into this fantastical realm. "Frogfolio Utopia" reminds me of the surreal landscapes of Yves Tanguy, where anything and everything feels possible, and nothing is quite as it seems. Art is at its best when it invites us to wander, dream, and question the world around us.
