Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar created this etching titled "Ruïne van Fort Sint-Pieter bij Maastricht." The image shows us the remnants of a fort, a structure built for defense and power, now reduced to rubble. What does it mean when symbols of strength decay? Perhaps it is a sign of changing times. Interestingly, amidst these ruins, there are two figures. Are they tourists, historians, or simply people seeking solace in a place marked by history? Their presence brings the scene to life. It asks us to reflect on our relationship with the past and how we find meaning in these spaces. This tiny etching becomes a powerful stage. It encourages us to consider the narratives we build around history and how we, as individuals, interact with the layers of time. It reminds us that even in decay, there is beauty, and in ruins, there is a story.
