Samuel Peploe’s painted this interior sometime around the turn of the 20th century, probably with oils on canvas. You know, the painting feels like it’s figuring itself out as it goes along. The whole composition seems on the verge of dissolving into blocks of color. I imagine Peploe, brush in hand, maybe squinting a little, trying to capture the light as it bounces around the room. It's a game of color and shape, isn't it? The way he's placed that bowler hat on the table, almost daring you to touch it. And the Japanese print – it's like a little window into another world. I love how the painting embraces uncertainty. It reminds me that art doesn't always have to be about answers, but about the questions we ask along the way. The conversation between painters never really ends, does it? We keep riffing off each other, finding new ways to see and feel.
