Kateryna Lysovenko made Like Bible with what looks like watercolor or gouache, and some kind of ink, maybe? The colors are earthy, the figure blends with the brown hues of the landscape, but then there’s this jolt of bright blue that cuts through the composition like a revelation. I keep coming back to the woman’s face; she’s so serene, so self-contained. Notice how Lysovenko uses thin washes of color to define her features, just a few strokes, yet they convey so much. It's like she's emerging from the earth itself. This reminds me of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s early portraits. There’s that same sense of quiet introspection, that same connection to the natural world. But Lysovenko brings her own sensibility to it, a rawness, an openness that’s all her own. It's art as a conversation, as a way of seeing and feeling and being in the world.
