John Marin made this drawing, Movement, Fantasy Series, sometime in the first half of the 20th century, using graphite on paper. It's a seemingly straightforward medium, yet it holds so much potential. Graphite, at its essence, is pure carbon, akin to the very stuff of life. Marin coaxes an extraordinary range of tones and textures from it. Notice how he captures a sense of dynamic energy. See those figures in motion, almost as if he's sketching his most fleeting thoughts, the artist's hand moves quickly. It’s intriguing how the apparent ease of the medium belies the skill required to master it. Marin's direct, expressive marks give the impression of spontaneity, but they are underpinned by considerable artistry. He’s not just recording what he sees, but conjuring an imaginative world. In doing so, Marin reminds us that even the simplest of materials can become a portal to the extraordinary.
