Melissa Meyer’s ‘Yaddo’ is made up of brushstrokes that dance and collide, conjuring an experience, a sensation, rather than depicting a place. I wonder what the space of Yaddo meant to her when she made this painting. The gestures are so quick, as if she wanted to capture something fleeting, a feeling of being there, the light, the air. The colors are layered, like memories, each stroke building upon the last, sometimes obscuring, sometimes revealing what lies beneath. Look how the blues melt into greens, offset by flashes of orange and pink. See that bold stroke of purple? It cuts through the composition, asserting itself, demanding attention, and adding a jolt to the overall harmony. It reminds me of work by Joan Mitchell. Meyer's paintings invite us to slow down, to feel, and to think, and in that process, perhaps we find a connection not just to the artist, but to our own experiences of seeing and being in the world. Isn't it amazing how one painter can spark something in another, creating a conversation across time and space?
