Alevtyna Kakhidze made this drawing in 2022, and it looks like it was done with a simple marker on paper. The marks are confident, almost childlike in their simplicity. I’m really drawn to the figure on the left; it's just an outline, but so full of gesture. The slightly awkward angle of the arm gives it so much personality. It reminds me of some of Hockney's more pared down drawings, where a single line can communicate so much. Then there's the text, which seems to be part of the drawing itself, not just added on. The phrases and words scattered around the image create a kind of visual poem. It's interesting how Kakhidze uses the flatness of the paper to create a space that feels both immediate and somehow distant. A bit like a dream. This piece makes me think about how much can be communicated with so little. It’s a good reminder that art doesn’t always need to be complicated to be profound.
