This vintage photograph depicts the West Wall of the monastery near the Dom of Utrecht, and feels like an exploration in tone, a study of sepia. I'm thinking about how the photographer set up the shot, probably using a large format camera, maybe even a tripod. The image comes into being through light, time, and intuition. There's a softness to the focus which almost makes the building look like a mirage - just there and about to disappear. I wonder if the people walking by even noticed that they were having their picture taken. Maybe it was a long exposure and they had to stand very still. I wonder if it was a sunny or overcast day. What was it like to develop the photograph in the darkroom? Photographers are in a constant dialogue with one another, across time, inspiring each other’s creativity, embracing the unpredictable and allowing for multiple readings.
