This print shows the west wall of the monastery at the Dom of Utrecht, made by an anonymous artist. It’s hard to tell exactly when, but it feels like a moment captured in time, a feeling I often chase when I'm painting. The tones are muted, almost monochromatic, giving the whole scene a dreamlike quality. I find myself drawn to the repetitive rhythm of the architectural elements, like the arches along the wall. Each one is slightly different, imperfect, which makes them feel so human. The surface is textured, almost grainy, and you can sense the hand of the artist in the making of each mark. It reminds me that art is as much about the process as it is about the final product. This piece makes me think of Agnes Martin’s subtle grids, where imperfection and repetition create a kind of meditative experience. It's this ongoing conversation across time that makes art so exciting, isn’t it?
