This rug was made by Francis Bacon, although I’m not sure when, or with what exactly! The shapes are laid out with such precision, almost like a modernist architect at work. There's a lot to unpack here. The color palette consists of soft browns, muted grays, black, and olive greens, creating a strangely soothing yet somber effect. If you look closely, you’ll notice these biomorphic lozenge shapes, sliced into color blocks like a cubist still life. I can’t help but wonder about their symbolism. The woven texture adds depth and dimension. But for me, the rug is less about comfort and more about conceptual engagement. Bacon’s paintings are far more frenetic, so maybe we can view this rug as a departure, or perhaps as a study in the relationship between geometric abstraction and the human form. Maybe it references Eileen Gray and her own work with rugs. Whatever the answer, it’s a testament to how artists can speak in many tongues.
