Rudolf Láng made this painting, Lion Watchers, with oil on canvas, and it feels like a moment captured, a fleeting impression. I love the way the colours interact—the muted greys and reds against that hazy, warm yellow of the lion's form. The paint application is quite direct, almost raw. You can see the brushstrokes, the way the paint sits on the surface; thick in some parts, thin in others. It’s not trying to hide its own making, which I always appreciate. There's a certain honesty there. If you look closely at the figures, the way their shapes are simplified and slightly awkward is very appealing. The lion itself is more of an aura, a golden presence, than a detailed depiction. It reminds me of some of Milton Avery’s paintings, where forms dissolve into fields of colour, or maybe even some early Philip Guston, with its soft, atmospheric light. And isn’t art just a conversation across time, anyway? Ambiguity and openness are what make it interesting.
