Walter Leblanc made this with, I imagine, extreme care and patience; a true feat of optical construction. Can you imagine being Leblanc, setting up your studio each day to make this? He must have been in such a trance. The black, white, and blue lines create a vibration, like heat rising off asphalt. But then it's cool, too, like the world is a well-ordered place, with the same rhythm repeating. What makes this so cool is that Leblanc made this before the digital age, so everything we are looking at here is real, it’s handmade. It feels almost handmade, and that’s the magic. This painting exists in a long history of mark-making, of humans trying to make sense of the world through rhythm and repetition. From Agnes Martin to Sol Lewitt and beyond. The conversation is ongoing, always inspiring.
