This is Du Fu's poem in cursive script, made by Zhu Yunming in the 15th or 16th century using ink on paper. The apparent immediacy of calligraphy belies the slow, repetitive practice required to master it. The term 'practice' is key here. Calligraphy was – and is – seen as a pathway to self-cultivation. It’s not just writing, it's like a meditative discipline. The qualities of ink and paper are essential to the finished effect. The ink must flow smoothly from the brush, allowing for nuanced variations in line thickness and texture. The absorbency of the paper dictates how the ink spreads, influencing the overall appearance of the characters. There's a real mastery here – a dialogue between the artist, the materials, and the cultural significance embedded in this very demanding art. Understanding the labor and skill involved helps us to move beyond mere appreciation of its aesthetic beauty, and towards a deeper understanding of its cultural value.

During the Ming period, members of the elite who gained fame for their calligraphy were often equally famous for their achievements in painting. Within elite society, calligraphy was equally admired as painting. It was viewed as quintessential yet functional, rather than as merely an independent visual art form or means of self-expression and cultivation. Many artists in the Ming dynasty were not only good at painting, but also excelled in composing poems and calligraphy. These three arts are known as the sanjue, or the “Three Perfections.” Both Wen Zhengming and Zhu Yunming are regarded as great masters with skills of the “Three Perfections.”
