Curatorial notes
This print, made by the widow Hendrik van der Putte, presents scenes from the life of Christ, each encapsulated within a circular frame. Notice how the sun, a symbol of enlightenment and divine presence, consistently illuminates each scene. Consider the persistent symbol of halos surrounding Christ, an ancient indicator of divinity, that has origins in pagan sun worship, and was later adopted to signify holiness across cultures. In ancient Roman art, the halo was associated with emperors, but early Christian artists adopted it to symbolize the divine nature of Christ and, later, saints. It became a visual shorthand for spiritual authority and grace. The cyclical return of this symbol shows how deeply it has been absorbed into the collective memory, reappearing throughout history, transformed yet recognizable, constantly reinvented. These symbols resonate with viewers on a deep, subconscious level and evoke the emotional power of faith and redemption.
