Lorenz Frølich made this study of a dove using graphite on paper. It’s a quick sketch rather than a finished drawing. Graphite, commonly known as pencil lead, is one of the most basic and accessible materials available to an artist. As we see in this drawing, graphite lends itself well to capturing subtle nuances of tone and texture. Frølich layers fine lines of graphite, and this allows him to capture the soft plumage of the dove, as well as the more defined aspects of its form. The immediacy of the medium and the speed of mark-making suggest that Frølich sought to capture the essence of his subject through direct observation. The study isn't highly rendered, but its suggestive power is undeniable. This work shows how the simplest materials, combined with close observation and skilled handwork, can transcend the mundane. It challenges any hierarchy between high art and humble craft.
