This page, “Blad 13 uit Stamboek van de leerlingen der Koloniale School voor Meisjes en Vrouwen te 's-Gravenhage deel II,” was made anonymously sometime between 1930 and 1949. It’s a fascinating document, almost like a ledger, where information has been carefully recorded in a grid-like structure. The beauty of this piece lies in its layered details. The grid, ruled lines and tight columns form the architecture of the page, but it's the handwritten entries which give the document its personality. Some of the signatures have a distinct character: see the bold, confident swoop of W. Friine’s signature or the looping flourishes in Kelly Leurs’. Each entry offers a tiny glimpse into a life, a moment frozen in time. This reminds me of the work of On Kawara, who made paintings to mark each new day. But unlike his systematic approach, this piece is raw and immediate, the result of an administrative process that takes on a life of its own. I'm interested in how these small, repeated gestures create a history of their own.
