Frans Hogenberg created this print titled *Intocht van Matthias te Brussel, 1578*, which translates to "Entry of Matthias in Brussels, 1578". Hogenberg made this engraving to commemorate the arrival of Archduke Matthias of Austria into Brussels in 1578. Matthias was invited to become the Governor-General of the Netherlands by the States-General during a revolt against Spanish rule. This print offers a glimpse into the political tensions of the time and how leaders were received and perceived. The procession, while grand, is depicted with a certain level of humanization. The artist captures the nuances of power, as we see the mix of eager acceptance and cautious observation among the figures. It subtly engages with themes of identity, belonging, and leadership during times of conflict. Hogenberg’s work invites us to reflect on the complexities of historical events. He also considers the roles individuals play in shaping collective memory and identity. The print serves as a reminder of the ongoing negotiations between power, perception, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.
