Lalla Essaydi created this photograph, Bullet #15, and right away you can see she is using patterns, light, and a muted palette in a way that feels both intentional and deeply considered. The texture of the image is fascinating, like a tapestry of metallic sheens. You can almost feel the cool touch of the metal against your skin. The subject's skin and costume are painted with the same henna patterns and script as the background, making the figure blend with the mise-en-scène. This particular method of mark making can be considered by the artist to be a process of reclaiming female identity. The figure in the photograph appears as a goddess or an oracle, with a serene and powerful presence. The way Essaydi uses pattern and repetition reminds me of the work of Miriam Schapiro, who combined craft and decoration with feminist themes. In both cases, the ambiguity of meaning is what makes the work so compelling.
