Curatorial notes
Wenceslaus Hollar created this delicate print, Virgo Nuptialis Argentinensis, using etching techniques. Notice how the dense, vertical lines of the skirt create a sense of height, drawing our eye upwards to meet the figure’s gaze. The intricate ruff and headdress frame her face, yet the soft modeling gives her an almost tangible presence within the linear rigidity. Hollar masterfully uses line to define form and texture; the parallel strokes both describe the fabric’s fall and create an abstract pattern that plays with depth. The figure's attire, while historically specific, transcends mere representation through Hollar's meticulous treatment of its texture and structure. This detailed approach invites us to consider not just what is depicted but how the very act of depiction shapes our understanding and engages with cultural codes of beauty and status in the 17th century.
