Editor: Here we have Giorgio Sommer's gelatin-silver print, "Gezicht op het San Marcoplein, de basiliek van San Marco en de voet van de Campanila," taken sometime between 1860 and 1890. The detail is just incredible, and the perspective really emphasizes the vastness of the square. What do you notice about its composition? Curator: The orthogonal lines created by the paving stones and building facades provide a structural framework for the image. This structured geometry is counterpointed by the more organic shapes of the figures populating the space. Do you see how the photographer uses light and shadow to accentuate the architectural details? Editor: Yes, I do. The highlights on the domes of the Basilica and the shadowed areas in the arcades give it so much depth. The tower on the right is so dominant, almost overpowering, but anchored by that detailing. It makes you want to walk right into it. Curator: Consider how the artist has situated the viewpoint. It’s neither too close nor too far. It allows one to analyze the elements individually while perceiving the totality of the constructed world it presents. Does this contribute to the photograph's overall aesthetic impact? Editor: Absolutely. It is both grand and intimate. You appreciate the architectural magnitude, but the figures draw your eye and makes you appreciate being able to people-watch in it as well. Thank you for sharing your insight. Curator: It has been my pleasure. Hopefully our audience also gains insight to better dissect the formal mechanisms within this photographic image.
