Editor: This is Francesco Bartolozzi's "Man Singing to Guitar Accompaniment," an engraving. It feels like a snapshot of a performance. What strikes you about it? Curator: The image reveals a moment of leisure and points to the social hierarchies dictating who has time for such pursuits. How does their attire speak to you of class and performativity? Editor: I see that the costumes are ornate. They seem aware of being observed. Curator: Exactly. Consider the role of art then: reinforcing societal norms, but also potentially subverting them. Did Bartolozzi intend critique, or celebration? Editor: I hadn't considered subversion. It gives me a different lens to view similar works. Curator: It is imperative to question the dominant narrative of the time and consider the perspectives and positionality within cultural production.
