This drawing of a rider entering a gate was made by Georges d'Espagnat. It's all rendered in black ink or crayon, every line and mark seems urgent. The rider and the horse almost seem to merge, and there's a flowing, swirling cloak that seems to be alive. What was d’Espagnat thinking about? Was he thinking about the Baroque? About movement? Maybe he was just really into horses? I feel like there are so many marks there, like a sculptor must feel when they are making a sculpture, always adding, always building. There’s an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time. Every artist, every time, is inspired by another's creativity. In painting we can embrace ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations, meanings over fixed readings.
