This fashion plate, Très Parisien, No. 8, was made in 1923. Two figures are depicted with a very limited palette of greens, blues, and blacks. I can only imagine what it was like for the artist to create this artwork. Probably, they were thinking about the geometric shapes in the image and how they could use them to create a sense of depth. Look at the green dress on the left. It has these hieroglyphic-like symbols. What do they mean? What stories do they tell? And the dress on the right has a floral embellishment at the back. Why? The artist leaves many of the questions unanswered, and, in so doing, invites us to become active participants in the creation of meaning. Each artist works from their own perspective, building upon the labor of those who came before, experimenting with what already exists, and adding new ideas to the conversation. It makes me think about all those hours spent alone in the studio, wrestling with form and color, pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
