Martin Bernigeroth created this engraving of Johann Burckhard Mencke, sometime before 1733. Mencke, a prominent figure of his time, held titles such as Royal Historiographer and Rector of the University of Leipzig. Bernigeroth’s portrayal captures Mencke amidst the cultural norms of the 18th century elite. The elaborate wig, lace collar, and draped fabric are visual indicators of status, yet the portrait does more than simply reflect Mencke’s social standing. This image also subtly questions notions of identity and representation. Bernigeroth’s detailed work invites us to look beyond the surface of power and consider the individual. How does Mencke’s representation play into the construction of historical narratives? How much of his real identity is captured by these symbols?
