Pavlo Makov made "A.B.C." in 2021, using what looks like printmaking techniques, to create a grid of architectural forms. The colour is a simple binary of muted blues and blacks, adding a layer of quiet, systematic observation to the composition. Looking closely, the paper has this beautiful, almost graph-like quality. The surface is layered with tiny, repeated images of house-like structures, each one slightly different but all sharing the same DNA. It's as if he's mapping out a city, or maybe a state of mind. What stands out is the tension between repetition and variation, order and chaos. See the way the lines intersect, creating a sense of depth and movement? There's something almost obsessive about the mark-making here, reminiscent of Hanne Darboven's systematic approach to artmaking. Ultimately, Makov leaves space for our interpretations, making the work a real conversation starter.
