Wouter Cool made this photograph of an unknown location in the United States at an unknown date. There's something about the greyscale of this photograph that captures a certain kind of atmosphere. It's not just about the absence of color; it’s about the range of tones, the way light and shadow play across the buildings, bridge and sky. Look at the bridge; you can almost feel the weight of it, solid and imposing. The lines of the cables overhead give a great structure to the picture. The sky seems endless. But it’s the surface that really gets me – the way the light reflects off the road, and how the buildings appear as blocks of different tonal densities. This photograph reminds me of other photographers who have been drawn to the urban landscape. Walker Evans, for instance, also captured the beauty and starkness of American cities. This photograph feels part of that conversation, an exploration of space and light that continues to fascinate us. The lack of hard definition allows for a kind of ambiguity, and encourages us to spend time with the image.
