Verzameling cirkels op lijnen

Editor: Here we have Carel Adolph Lion Cachet's "Verzameling cirkels op lijnen," dating anywhere between 1874 and 1945, created with pencil on paper. The piece consists of lines topped by a series of circles. There's something very dreamlike and airy about this work. How do you interpret it? Curator: Oh, it’s delightful, isn't it? It whispers of plans and possibilities, perhaps an idea bubbling in Cachet's mind, yearning to take form. The geometric abstraction gives it a very modernist vibe, of course. Do you get the feeling that maybe these were notes on what could have been part of his commercial art design? Editor: Commercial design? That's interesting. I was so focused on the "art" aspect of it, I didn't really consider a practical application. What makes you say that? Curator: Well, Cachet's work often blended art and design and it could be, I am only supposing of course, he considered those spheres as parts of patterns for fabrics, maybe? Or even mosaic work! The repetition and simplicity are compelling. What emotions does the work trigger for you, or rather, the freedom of its strokes? Editor: Hmmm. Initially, it felt unfinished, but I see what you mean. It has freedom! I am wondering now about Cachet, working out all these design challenges by using simple, but strong form. Curator: Indeed, there is the magic - by its unfinished nature, this work challenges the definition of Art! What did you think about the piece? Editor: It gave me a chance to think about "making," as a thoughtful practice, and less about creating “high art." Curator: Couldn’t have put it better myself! Thanks!
