Antoni Tapies made this skeletal image on material, using a dark palette and an additive approach to mark-making. It really gets you thinking about artmaking as a process, right? There's something raw and visceral about the texture. It's all built up, layer upon layer. The bone-like white feels like it’s been scratched or dug out from underneath. And those ribs, marked with cryptic numbers and letters, are they a hidden code, a countdown, or just the poetry of decay? Tapies reminds me a bit of Alberto Burri. Both artists push the boundaries of their materials, using texture and form to convey something deeper about the human condition, a meditation on life, death, and the ephemeral nature of existence. Art’s not about answers, is it? It’s more about the questions.
