Juan Laurent created this albumen print, titled 'View of the Tagus near Toledo,' in the mid-19th century. Laurent, a Frenchman working in Spain, captured the Iberian landscape at a time when photography was still finding its footing as both an art form and a tool for documentation. The lone figure walking along the riverbank draws us into a narrative of solitude and perhaps, contemplation. How does the individual relate to the vastness of the landscape? Does the muted tones and stark contrast speak to the emotional landscape of the artist? Or perhaps the person in the shot? Photography at this time was enmeshed with colonial and orientalist perspectives. What stories are told and, importantly, whose stories are left untold? The image invites us to consider the power dynamics inherent in landscape photography. It reflects how the land and its people are perceived through a foreign lens. It’s a visual record but also a cultural artifact, shaped by the social and political context of its time.
