Léon Laroche created this print of a fauteuil and stoel, an armchair and chair, using delicate lines and muted colors. I can almost feel Laroche’s hand, steady and precise, as he meticulously rendered each curve and flourish. What was he thinking as he captured the light glinting off the gilded frames? I imagine him pausing, squinting, making choices about line weight and shading. The pale hues create a sense of refined elegance. It reminds me a little of Fragonard, or even Watteau. You can see how artists from different disciplines build on each other’s ideas. Painting, like printmaking, is a constant conversation. We pick up where others left off, adding our own voices to the chorus. And in those moments of creation, we find a way to express something deeply personal, even within the confines of representation.
