Curatorial notes

Jan Dam Steuerwald created this print of coins and cut stones, using etching, around the mid-19th century. In the Netherlands at this time, there was a surge of interest in national history and antiquities. This work reflects a burgeoning culture of collecting and cataloging, a trend linked to the rise of public museums and the professionalization of art history. We see the artist carefully rendering these objects, echoing the scientific and scholarly ambitions of the era. He's participating in a broader project of ordering and classifying the past, very much in line with the mission of institutions such as the Rijksmuseum, where this print is now housed. To fully understand such an image, the art historian digs into the archives, examining exhibition records, collectors' correspondence, and the publications of learned societies. In doing so, we can reveal the complex social life of art.
