Curatorial notes
Romeyn de Hooghe created this etching, titled ‘The Allied European Princes Smash the Furnace of War,’ around 1706. The composition is horizontally divided, creating distinct registers of action and symbolism. The frenetic activity in the upper half contrasts sharply with the smaller, almost storyboard-like scenes below. De Hooghe employs dynamic lines to convey movement and chaos, particularly around the central image of the furnace being attacked. The symbolism is rich, with the furnace representing war. It is being destroyed by the Allied Princes, who are fighting to restore peace. The contrast of light and shadow further accentuates the drama, drawing the eye to the key elements. Structurally, the etching functions as a form of visual rhetoric. De Hooghe uses symbolism and dynamic composition to communicate a clear political message. The placement of different narrative moments within a single frame encourages the viewer to interpret relationships between the destructive forces of war and the hope for peace.
