This is Robert Frank’s "Greek baptism no number" and it’s a series of black and white photographs, arranged like strips of film, capturing a baptism ceremony. The contact sheet aesthetic is a real peek into the artist’s process, like seeing the raw material before it gets edited and polished. I imagine Frank moving around, trying to find the right angle, responding to the light, and to the emotions in the room. Photography, like painting, is all about gesture - a snap of the wrist, a tilt of the head, the way you decide to frame a shot. There's a rhythm to these images that I can feel. It reminds me how artists are always collecting, always looking, always trying to freeze a moment, to understand what it means to be alive. I bet Frank was thinking about other photographers who documented rituals. These frames aren't precious or posed; there's something so spontaneous and heartfelt about them.
