The Road South

Daniel Lang made this print, called 'The Road South', using etching. Look at how the etched lines create a whole world. It’s not just about the image, but the feel of the thing. You can almost hear the scratching of the tool on the plate, right? Etching is all about texture. The density of tiny marks builds the depth of tone, from bright road to dark trees, and makes the whole image sing. See how the trees form a dark mass along the right side of the road? Then see the way the light sort of bounces off the road itself? I feel the push and pull between these two. For me, this piece speaks to the printmaking tradition of artists like Whistler, finding beauty in everyday scenes, and reminding us that art isn't about answers, but about the ongoing conversation of seeing.
